The French National Agency for Medicines and Health Products Safety (ANSM) is continuing its efforts to combat the illegal sale of peptides online, some of which are marketed as aGLP-1s. The reason is that these illegal products pose significant risks to those who use them.
Injectable peptides, often sold in vials and pen injectors, are sold online, on social media or through informal channels (friends, acquaintances, etc.). They are often marketed as products that help you lose weight, “cut” (editor’s note: in bodybuilding, this involves losing fat whilst maintaining muscle mass) or improve sporting performance. “Be vigilant: do not buy them, do not use them,” urges the ANSM.
The Agency reminds users that these products have not been assessed by the health authorities and are not authorised. Their composition is unclear and their use may lead to serious health problems. The ANSM has recently received several reports following the use of fraudulent peptides, notably retatrutide. Some people have even had to be hospitalised.
Among the side effects that may have serious consequences, the Agency lists:
• Nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, stomach ache
• Significant loss of appetite, dehydration
• Extreme tiredness, feeling unwell, dizziness
• Liver damage (detectable in blood tests)
• Abnormal sensitivity to touch
• Infection at the injection site
• Severe allergic reaction…
In this context, the ANSM has just taken several public health measures ordering the withdrawal of products marketed as containing a GLP-1 agonist.
