French cosmetovigilance: the 2024/2025 review

Cosmétovigilance : le bilan 2024/2025

At the 26th Cosmed Regulatory Congress on 1 April 2026, Élodie Lontsi, Scientific Project Manager – Cosmetovigilance and Tatouvigilance at ANSES, reviewed recent cosmetovigilance figures in France, as well as the main implications of reports of serious adverse effects on the management of certain cosmetic ingredients.

In total, in 2024, ANSES received 366 cosmetovigilance reports: the majority came from consumers (50.5%), followed by healthcare professionals (30.9%) and Responsible Persons and distributors (18.1%). Beauty professionals remain a very small minority, accounting for just 0.5% of reports.
“It should be noted that only 19% of reports received from consumers were assessed as serious, compared with 24% of those from healthcare professionals,” said Élodie Lontsi.

In terms of the types of products involved:
• 54% were skincare products
• 21% were haircare products
• 10% were deodorants
• 6% were beauty products (make-up, nail products, temporary tattoos)

Serious adverse effects (SAEs)

The majority were reported by the Responsible Persons (50%). 29% were reported by consumers and beauty professionals, and 21% by healthcare professionals.

ANSES has identified the types of products associated with the highest number of adverse events:
• 71% were linked to hair removal products
• 49% to hair care products (colouring, bleaching)
• 43% to beauty care products
