World Water Day will be celebrated on March 22, 2025. Essential for nature, essential for humans, water is also essential for the cosmetics industry. Estelle Dehier, from Labosphère, has therefore chosen to celebrate it too.
Why is water essential for cosmetics?
• The vast majority of cosmetic products contain water.
• Certain machines require water to operate.
• Production and packaging tools and work areas are also cleaned with water.
How can its use be optimized? What water quality is required for which use(s)?
Water as a cosmetic ingredient in a formula
Considered a cosmetic raw material in its own right, water must meet perfectly mapped and controlled quality standards:
• Ion content (calcium, magnesium, etc.)
• Impurity content (sulfates, phthalates, PFAS)
• Heavy metal content
• Microbiological quality
The quality of the water used in the manufacture of cosmetic products must be reproducible and regularly monitored, as it can have a direct impact on the quality of the products manufactured:
• Physicochemical impact
• Impact on stability over time
• Microbiological impact
If water is to be considered a “real” raw material in the formula, the control methods must be relevant!
Water is very often considered to be the main solvent in the formula (see: making the QSP in water). But it is not insignificant, and its composition can vary greatly depending on its origin. What we see in …
