ISO has just published a new version of standard 14001 – “Environmental management systems — Requirements with guidance for use”. ISO 14001:2026 does not reinvent the standard. It sharpens it for a world where environmental performance is judged on results, not intentions.
ISO 14001 is the internationally recognized standard for environmental management systems (EMS). It provides a framework for organizations to design and implement an EMS, and continually improve their environmental performance. By adhering to this standard, organizations can ensure they are taking proactive measures to minimize their environmental footprint, comply with relevant legal requirements, and achieve their environmental objectives. The framework encompasses various aspects, from resource usage and waste management to monitoring environmental performance and involving stakeholders in environmental commitments.
The updated edition introduces clearer guidance, more intuitive navigation and stronger alignment with key environmental priorities such as climate change, biodiversity and resource efficiency. It also reflects rising expectations, with greater emphasis on leadership, governance and a more integrated approach to managing impacts across operations and value chains.
