PPWR: the European Commission’s Guidance
On 30 March 2026, the European Commission published its guidelines on the application of Regulation (EU) 2025/40 on packaging and packaging waste, along with a FAQ, to ensure the uniform application of the new rules and to address stakeholders’ practical questions.
Cosmetics Europe and IFRA warn against “misinformation” regarding Omnibus VI
As the Commission’s proposal on simplifying chemical regulations is set to be presented to the European Parliament in late April 2026, a heated debate is raging between consumer and environmental advocacy groups and the industry. In a joint statement, Cosmetics Europe and IFRA warn against a campaign of misinformation.
Safety Gate 2025 report: cosmetics top the list of reports
The European Commission presented its annual report on Safety Gate on March 5, 2025. The first finding was that of the 4,671 alerts notified, 36% concerned cosmetic products, which were affected much more often than toys (16%) and electrical appliances and equipment (11%).
Assessment of chemical mixtures: SCHEER tasked with revising the 2011 Opinion
In 2011, the three independent non-food Scientific Committees of the European Union (SCHER, SCENHIR, and SCCS) provided a joint opinion on “the toxicity and risk assessment of chemical mixtures.” The European Commission is now asking SCHEER (Scientific Committee on Health, Environmental and Emerging Risks) to update this Opinion.
Urban wastewater treatment: Cosmetics Europe's appeal dismissed as inadmissible
In March 2025, Cosmetics Europe, along with EFPIA (European Federation of Pharmaceutical Industries and Associations), filed an appeal with the EU Court regarding the revision of the Urban Waste Water Treatment Directive, challenging the application of the polluter pays principle to the pharmaceutical and cosmetics industries alone. The Court has just ruled that this action is inadmissible.
