How to obtain the EU Ecolabel

During a webinar organised by the European Commission in December 2024, Georgia Faraca from the European Commission’s Joint Research Centre detailed the EU Ecolabel criteria that the cosmetics sector must meet, as well as the process for obtaining it.

In this webinar, the advantages and opportunities offered by the EU Ecolabel were first developed. Once interest had been aroused, all that remained was to explain how to obtain it, and this is what Georgia Faraca set out to do.
“The first document you need to refer to is Annex I of Commission Decision 2021/1870”, she began. This sets out the criteria for the EU Ecolabel for cosmetic products.
These criteria are valid until 31 December 2027. Thereafter, they may be revised or their validity extended.

All cosmetic products covered by Regulation 1223/2009 can apply for the Ecolabel, whether they are rinse-off products (soaps, shampoos, shower gels, shaving products, etc.) or leave-on products (creams, oils, styling products, make-up, deodorants, etc.).

The criteria

One of the aims of the EU Ecolabel is to help consumers easily identify the best products on the market from an environmental point of view.
“To do this, we carry out a complete analysis of products, looking at their life-cycle impacts and identifying those that are most crucial for the environment,” explained Georgia Faraca. “And we define criteria on this basis.”
For cosmetic products, seven criteria have been established.
