Is sustainable consumption slowing down?

For the 21st consecutive year, Greenflex and ADEME have presented their barometer of responsible consumption. The results of the 2025 edition show that, despite growing awareness of the climate emergency, consumer commitment is at a low ebb.

The survey was conducted from March 3 to 14, 2025, with a sample of 1004 people.

Results

53% of French people say they are concerned and believe it is urgent to take action to preserve the environment.
Eight out of ten also believe that the climate crisis means we need to rethink the way we live and consume. “This figure, which has been stable for several years, shows the need to act in the face of climate change,” comments Greenflex. “This year, however, the proportion of citizens who”strongly agree” is down (31% vs. 40% in 2024). Is the link between consumption and the future of the planet weakening in the minds of the French?“

According to the study’s figures, mobilization for more responsible behavior is running out of steam, notably through the drop in the number of people trying to do everything they can. 73% of respondents are committed, down 4 points on last year.
Some practices are even on the decline, such as preferring second-hand purchases to new ones. This phenomenon is down 6 points by 2025, and now concerns only 38% of consumers.
