Responsible consumption: French people are getting back on board

Consommation responsable : les Français se remobilisent

For the 22nd consecutive year, Greenflex and ADEME have released their responsible consumption barometer. The 2026 edition offers an encouraging sign following the slowdown observed in recent years.

The survey was conducted from January 28 to February 6, 2026, among a sample of 1,009 people representative of the French adult population.

77% of French people say they support more responsible consumption in 2026, compared to 73% in 2025.
Young adults are driving this trend: 88% of those aged 25–34 say they are actively engaged, compared to 70% of those aged 55 and older.
Seven out of ten French people clearly see the link between their consumption choices and the future of the planet. This figure rises to 91% among the most engaged individuals.

Consuming less and better

78% of respondents believe that changing how we produce is no longer enough and that we must also consume less (an increase of seven percentage points compared to 2025).
At the same time, purchasing behaviors are changing. 74% of French people say they make their choices based on a product’s origin, 63% based on production methods, and 64% by prioritizing products that pay producers fairly.
These three indicators have remained stable or shown a slight increase over the past three years.
