The opportunities of the European Ecolabel for cosmetic products

Les opportunités de l'Écolabel européen pour les produits cosmétiques

It has been around since 1992, but given the current regulatory context, it seems to be more attractive than ever. During a webinar organised by the European Commission in December 2024, Silvia Ferratini, Team Leader for the European Ecolabel at DG Environment, presented its advantages and detailed the opportunities it offers today.

“Mobilizing the industry for a clean and circular economy was one of the building blocks of the European Green Deal that at the same time was recognizing the need to empower consumers in the green transition,” Silvia Ferratini said. “In the past years, several initiatives were issued with the intention to empower sustainable choices from consumers.”

The regulatory context

Silvia Ferratini then cited three texts that she described as relevant to both the European Ecolabel and the cosmetics sector.

The Ecodesign for Sustainable Product Regulation (ESPR)
This Regulation aims at ensuring that the products on the market are sustainable through the issue of specific information and performance requirements, specific for certain product group. The digital product passport that it introduces will help in disclosing information about the products to different stakeholders along the value chain. The ESPR foresees the possibility to set mandatory green public procurement requirements for certain product group.
Work on ESPR has started for textiles, and the next product group that will be tackled will be disclosed in the ESPR work plan that will be issued by April 2025. We already know that cosmetic products cosmétiques are within the priority products that have …
