A 2-in-1 shampoo is a hair care product designed to combine two functions in a single use: shampoo and conditioner. This type of product cleanses and detangles hair in a single application and was created to make consumers’ lives easier. But do they also make life easier for formulators? Nothing could be less certain!

Main functions: cleaning and detangling

Generally speaking, surfactants (anionic and non-ionic) are the main ingredients that cleanse the hair by removing dirt, excess sebum and hair product residue.
Conditioning agents (polymers and/or cationic surfactants), on the other hand, give shampoo its detangling properties.
Secondarily, this type of shampoo also softens the hair and makes it smooth and shiny thanks to the presence of silicones, oils and/or other emollients.

A challenge for formulators?

From a formulation perspective, these functionalities seem to be at odds with each other. Shampoo is designed to cleanse the hair fibre and remove sebum and dust, whereas conditioner must leave residues on the hair to detangle it.
Furthermore, shampoos must produce a rich lather (using anionic surfactants) when used, which is not compatible with most conditioning agents (often cationic surfactants).

Regardless of the incompatibility between cleansing agents and conditioners, it is important to find the right balance between cleansing and hair care. 2-in-1 shampoos must be gentle enough not to dry out the hair, while being effective enough to cleanse thoroughly.
