Sustainability is an important criterion for consumers. According to a recent OpinionWay poll for RetailTech, part of the general public believes that retailers (including cosmetics) have a role to play in the climate crisis… and that, for the moment, their actions are not sufficient.
This study was carried out among 1001 people. Interviews were conducted between May 6 and 7, 2025.
Results
According to the survey, a majority of those polled feel that retailers do not contribute enough to preserving the environment (57%) or to the health of the country’s economy (57%).
A further 48% believe that retailers’ social actions are not sufficient. For their part, respondents say they are trying to consume more responsibly, but are not convinced that this can really influence the practices of brands and chains (48%).
Panellists also believe:
• That they have a role to play in choosing responsible retailers (86%)
• That technology can help retailers become more environmentally friendly (78%)
• That social actions by retailers are marketing actions only (74%)
• That environmental actions by retailers are marketing actions only (73%)
• That a company that makes an effort to protect the environment cannot compete in the marketplace (46%)
