
French consumers’ expectations regarding retail remain marked by economic uncertainty. According to an OpinionWay study conducted for La Retail Tech, a majority of French people anticipate stagnation or even a decline in their purchasing power in 2026, while expressing high expectations in terms of prices, promotions, and service quality.
This survey was conducted among a representative sample of 1,029 people aged 18 and over, who were interviewed online on January 21 and 22, 2026.
Purchasing power still under pressure
When asked about the evolution of their purchasing power in 2026, 48% of French people believe it will decrease, while 39% think it will remain stable. Only 13% anticipate an improvement in their situation.
In detail, 3% of respondents believe that their purchasing power will increase significantly and 10% slightly. Conversely, 32% anticipate a moderate decline and 16% a sharp decline.
Overall stable but cautious consumption
Despite these economic prospects, a majority of French people plan to maintain their level of consumption in 2026.
Online, 70% of those surveyed say they will consume at least as much as in 2025 (including 57% at the same level and 13% more). Conversely, 29% plan to reduce their online purchases.
The trend is similar in stores. 67% of respondents believe they will consume as much or more than in 2025, while 32% anticipate a decline in their consumption in physical stores.
