
To mark the launch of its second “Salon de Soins Itinérant”, the L’Oréal Foundation is unveiling an Ipsos bva study on the role of beauty care in the personal recovery of women in vulnerable situations.
The survey was conducted between 30 April and 4 May 2026 amongst 2,000 French people representative of the national population.
Deep-rooted guilt
More than one in two French people (54%) feel guilty when they take time for themselves. Women are slightly more affected than men (55% compared to 53%).
Among women under 35, the figure rises to 71%. Yet 95% of respondents consider it legitimate, or even essential, to be able to look after oneself.
This paradox is even more pronounced for women in vulnerable situations. More than 9 in 10 French people believe it is difficult for a woman who is a victim of domestic violence (95%), living in precarious circumstances (94%) or suffering from a serious illness (94%) to look after herself. Single mothers are not spared: 91% of French people believe they too struggle to look after themselves.
Cosmetics: an ally in everyday life
71% of respondents say they have already observed the positive impact of self-care on the morale or return to work of someone going through a difficult period.
