Holiday season: how are French people's finances looking?

As the holiday season approaches, French consumers are attempting to balance enjoyment with prudence. According to an OpinionWay survey for Sofinco, spending during this period remains a significant challenge.

This study was conducted in early October 2025 with a representative sample of 1,017 people.

While the holidays remain synonymous with sharing, they also represent a significant economic burden.
66% of respondents consider them to be as much a time for socializing as a financial constraint. For 64%, this period is even when they spend the most during the year, and an equivalent proportion say they do not want to restrict themselves despite the inflationary context.

Nearly half of those surveyed (49%) admit to feeling obliged to give gifts, even when it puts a strain on their finances. And 41% admit to having exceeded the budget they set for themselves last year, spending an average of €190 more on gifts.

The search for a new balance

For 63% of French people, end-of-year shopping must now be responsible: they say they want to be mindful of the environmental impact of their purchases. Nearly 58% of those surveyed would like to limit the number of gifts they buy. However, this desire for restraint is moderate, given that the average budget for gifts remains substantial (€413 on average).
