Organic cosmetics: consumer expectations

Cosmétiques bio : les attentes des consommateurs

Organic shops are returning to growth. However, their sales of cosmetics and food supplements have been falling for the past three years. Cosmébio and Synadiet commissioned a study from the consultancy Senseva (with the support of La Maison de la Bio) to understand why. Caroline Girard, Head of Marketing and Development at Cosmébio, and Claire Guignier, Director of Public Affairs and Communications at Synadiet, presented the findings during a webinar on 15 October 2026.

The study was conducted from April to June 2026. It is based on an online survey of 1,508 people. Senseva also interviewed 12 industry professionals.

The organic retail network returned to growth in late 2025, with a 6.6% increase. This recovery was driven by the food sector, particularly fresh produce and fruits and vegetables. Cosmetics account for only 3.7% of organic stores’ total revenue, but they make up one-third of non-food sales.

Frequent shoppers

Customers shop at organic stores primarily for health reasons. They cite product quality as the next most important factor, followed by environmental protection. Customers who buy cosmetics at organic stores also do their grocery shopping there. Forty-eight percent of them buy fruits and vegetables there every week. They visit organic stores twice as often as customers who buy their cosmetics elsewhere. “There’s a strong overlap between the food aisles and the beauty and health section of organic stores,” notes Caroline Girard. More than 85% of regular buyers of cosmetics and dietary supplements visit this section at least half the time. 45% of cosmetics buyers visit it on every trip. And 90% of beauty aisle customers are also customers of the dietary supplement aisle.
