From protection to strengthening: the latest shift in cosmetics

The trend research firm Mintel has published Beyond Protection, a report focusing on the future of skin protection. It cross-references online consumer comments, analyzed by its subsidiary Black Swan Data, with product launches, in order to identify untapped niches in the skincare market.

The use of sun protection is on the rise and skincare routines are becoming more sophisticated. Yet more and more consumers describe their skin as reactive and sensitive. “This paradox is reshaping the future of skincare,” comments Mintel.

Protection has become a given

Protecting one’s skin is now second nature, something consumers expect from any skincare product. And it is no longer just about shielding oneself from the effects of the sun. Protection also covers pollution, oxidative stress, harsh weather and blue light. Put simply, protecting one’s skin means defending it against everyday aggressors.

The focus is now on strengthening

A milestone has been reached. Consumers no longer simply want to preserve their skin: they want to make it stronger. The focus is on the skin barrier, the outermost layer that protects the skin from external aggressors and retains moisture. A healthy barrier limits irritation and reduces sensitivity. Strengthening it is becoming the new definition of beautiful skin. Interest is growing, but the product range is not keeping pace: research into the skin barrier has increased by 88%, whilst product launches have risen by just 13%.
